No Lazy Money

How a Gen Xer turns $0.70 surveys and $10 website tests into a retirement plan.

No Lazy Money

Retirement advice wasn't written for us. It was written for a 25-year-old with forty years until retirement and a company match. Or a guy with a trust fund and a boat. Nobody wrote it for a 50-year-old with a mortgage, two teenagers, and a retirement account that was operating on autopilot.

So I built a machine. Think Mousetrap, the board game: a contraption where every piece feeds the next one. Only this one actually ends with a mouse getting caught. Or doesn't? Okay, the metaphor is falling apart – but the machine works.

Here it is:

Step 1: Earn it.

Four primary platforms: Prolific, Connect, Clickworker, and UserTesting. Some days it's a $0.15 survey. Some days it's a $10 website test. Usually it's somewhere in the middle. I've got the real numbers on each one.

→Compare the four platforms honestly

Step 2: Build the firewall.

The whole machine runs on one fundamental rule: No Lazy Money. A $6.50 payout that lands in the checking account doesn't do much for retirement – it buys Starbucks. So, every dollar earned stays out of the primary budget (or account) and goes straight to the investment accounts – it gets a job the minute it arrives.

→Read the rules

Step 3: Put it to work.

The money flows into four pillars each with a specific job: the heavy lifters, the dividend snowball, the shock absorbers, and a fenced-off sandbox for scratching the stock-picking itch without wrecking the plan. Boring on purpose.

Does it actually work?

Don't take my word for it. The receipts are on the site.
