Never Too Late To The Party
I'm The Hustler and this is my journey into online side hustling to help pad my Generation X retirement fund.
Before this site had a name, a logo, or a domain, it was just me trying to find some ideas how to make a little extra money on the side. Ten months later, not only have I started this blog but I have active and ongoing income from sites like Prolific, Connect, Clickworker, dscout, and UserTesting. I am on pace to max out the contributions to my IRA which I opened this year. Most importantly, none of this is or ever was intended to replace my day job. It's supplemental income, aimed at one specific target: padding retirement funds - not retiring itself.
So, if you're looking to quit your job and become your own boss, sorry but this probably isn't your site. What I've got instead is real-world mileage. I'm firmly established as a member of Generation X, I have a full-time career of over twenty years in the same industry, I've got two teenagers, a mortgage, and I'm side-hustling to retire earlier or more comfortably than I would have otherwise. If that's closer to your situation, welcome — crank up some late 80's or early 90's music and pull up a chair!!
Going forward, everything here will fall into one of three buckets:
Chronicle — the actual story told roughly in order. How I found Clickworker, stumbled into Prolific, what worked and what didn't (including the embarrassing stuff). I'm publishing new entries first and backfilling the earlier chapters as I go, so the timeline will fill in over the next few months rather than arriving all at once.
Playbook — the practical, evergreen stuff. How I fit a site hustle around a full-time job without burning out. How I've been using AI tools to find (but not complete) the work itself and to build this site. Less "here's how to get rich," more "here's what actually worked for me when you have two hours on a weeknight."
Framework — the investing side of the equation. Since padding retirement isn't just about earning extra — it's about what happens to that money afterward. I'll be walking through how I've restructured my own approach across a small brokerage account and my IRA evolving away from what was honestly a mishmash of ETFs and single stocks toward something with a deliberate plan. I won't be handing out specific fund picks — that's not my lane — but I'll be documenting the actual decisions and the reasoning behind them.
What this isn't
No hype, no "quit your 9-to-5" energy, no promises that this will change your life. This is slower and more boring by design — which, if you're also Gen X, might be exactly the idea that works on you.
What's next
The next few posts will start filling in the Chronicle from the beginning. A Playbook post on fitting this around a full-time job is also in the queue along with the first real Framework post once the three-post structure is established.
If any of this sounds like your kind of side quest, subscribe below — new posts land there first.
