The Platforms: Four Side Hustle Platforms, Compared Honestly
Online side hustling is a lot like Skeeball at the Boardwalk -- plenty of options, varying performance, and chasing that hot hand. Here is an honest, data-backed look at Prolific, Connect, Clickworker, and UserTesting based on my real earnings.
Online side hustling is a little like the Skeeball machines at the Boardwalk – there's a lot to choose from, they've all been used quite a bit, some work better than others, and you never know when you've got the hot hand to make those tickets fall like rain.
Everything here comes directly from my own accounts, my daily dashboard tracking, and actual earnings. No sponsored fluff or sugarcoated estimates and no get-rich-quick claims. (Reminder: This is my actual operational playbook not financial advice.)
The Quick Compare Matrix
| Platform | Primary Task Type | Typical Earnings / Rate | Friction & Approval | Best Used As... |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prolific | Academic & behavioral studies | About $10 – $15 / hr | Waitlist & application | The Core Driver: Pay shown upfront, plenty of variety, and my number one when I stay picky. |
| (CloudResearch) Connect | Academic micro-research & jury studies | About $10 – $15 / hr | Quick approval, low screen-outs | The Reliable Secondary: Low-drama, steady workflow, PayPal or Stripe payouts. |
| Clickworker | AI voice evaluation & microtasks | Variable depending on availability | Fast entry, variable task flow | The Fill-In: Fills off-hours gaps, and when the AI voice projects flow, it can be my biggest earner. |
| UserTesting | App/website tests, screen & voice recording | $10 per 5–10 min test (live interviews pay more) | Screen-outs & closed studies | The High-Yield Sprinter: Strong rate per active minute, but tests go fast and many are closed or screen you out. |
Rates are my own estimates from my own numbers, not guarantees. UserTesting's rate doesn't count time spent waiting or getting screened out.
The Lineup
1. Prolific: Where I Leveled Up
Short, academic-backed research studies where you see total pay and hourly equivalent upfront before clicking. It requires an initial waitlist and steady volume, but it remains my number-one daily driver as long as you stay selective about hourly rates.
- Best For: Steady, modest money during spare desk minutes.
- Watch Out For: Competition on high-paying studies and seasonal university lulls (like summer and winter breaks).

2. Connect: The Steady Workhorse
A low-drama platform featuring academic surveys alongside occasional high-yield $5 to $20 mock jury studies. With only 1 rejection across 2,500+ completed projects, it consistently acts as a reliable partner to Prolific.
- Best For: A low-friction, fast-payout complement to your daily browser tabs.
- Watch Out For: Weekend dry spells and standard pending approval windows that can take up to 14 days.

3. Clickworker: The Surprise Winner
I initially wrote Clickworker off as basic "training wheels," but it wound up carrying my entire summer. Thanks to high-yield voice evaluation projects, it pulled in roughly $1,299 from July through September alone.
- Best For: People with patience who can listen to the same thing over and over (with the retirement goal in mind!) and knocking out repetitive tasks.
- Watch Out For: Significant swings in task volume – from $570 in July down to $274 in August based on project availability.

4. UserTesting: The Newest Act
Companies pay you to test websites and mobile apps aloud: $1 quick surveys, $5–$10 screen recordings, and higher-paying live interviews. $10 tests usually wrap up in 5 to 10 minutes, making the calculated hourly rate impressive.
- Best For: Snagging quick $10 tests every other day (early morning seems to be the best time for these)
- Watch Out For: Unforgiving screeners where you won't qualify, and studies that fill up instantly.

How to Build Your Platform Rotation
The key lesson from my summer earnings recaps is simple: never marry your favorite platform.
- Keep Dual Anchors Active: Keep both Prolific and Connect open in adjacent browser tabs during the day. Prioritize tasks under 15 minutes with high hourly equivalents to maintain steady momentum.
- Treat UserTesting as an Opportunistic Catch: Keep the site open in your browser. When an alert pops, run through the screener quickly. Accept screen-outs graciously and bank the $10 wins when you qualify (and there's nothing wrong with $8, $5, or $1 ones either as they are usually fast).
- Use Clickworker as a Solid Back-up: When academic platforms enter summer or weekend lulls, pivot to Clickworker to capitalize on specialized audio, voice, or batch microtasks.
Quick Answers & Real Metrics
- Which platform pays the most? It depends on how you measure it. On paper, UserTesting pays the highest calculated hourly rate ($10 for 5–10 minutes of active work) but task volume is limited. For total net income, Clickworker led my Q3 results with $1,299 earned from July through September but that seems to be an outlying quarter on that platform.
- How much can you realistically make? My combined summer total came out to $2,344 (roughly $781 per month) across all active platforms. That reflects one person's dedicated setup and working around my life's requirements; your individual results will vary based on your own.
- Do I need to pick just one platform? No – and doing so is a mistake. Diversifying across 3 or 4 platforms is what kept income consistent through seasonal dips in August.
