Number One Dime Time
A look at the real numbers from Clickworker, Prolific, and Connect in February and March—and the AI search that changed how I handle the money.
If you haven't read The Math Started Mathing yet, worth starting there. This post is the numbers behind that story.
Breaking Down the Two Months
When I first started poking around on these platforms, I wasn't sure at all where any of this was heading. February and March were really the two months where the whole thing stopped feeling like a random set of experiments and started feeling like something resembling an actual system.
Here is how the money actually broke down across the three platforms:
February
Clickworker: $192.97
Prolific: $547.10
Connect: $49.41 (started February 18th — roughly ten days)
February Total: $789.48
March
Clickworker: $114.54
Prolific: $317.28
Connect: $138.70
March Total: $570.52
Two Month Total: $1,360.00
What I Learned
- Prolific took the lead fast. True to Gemini's prediction, Prolific really is the Gold Standard. In my first full month, I made more on Prolific than I did on Clickworker in my first ten weeks. I definitely didn't see that coming but seeing that total made it pretty obvious where I should be spending most of my time.
- Connect took a minute to figure out. That $49 in February was not huge but I only joined on February 18th. Once I got used to how their dashboard works and where to look for studies, March almost tripled and has been a solid number two ever since.
- Finding my Clickworker Lane. The drop from $192 down to $114 in March was unintentional but not unexpected. I started realizing I enjoyed doing the quick voice-recording tasks on there so I let the rest go rather than forcing it (often times for less money for the amount of time compared to Prolific).
The AI Search That Changed How I Handle the Money
In just five months, I was feeling pretty good about how things were shaping up. But the biggest shift during these two months wasn't the extra cash, it was figuring out what to actually do with it. How do I make it work for me toward my retirement money?
As usual, I typed a question into Gemini:
"If I sell stock and reinvest in another stock, b (sic) do I have to pay capital gains?"
I’m no financial expert (and none of this is advice) but the answer was a real lightbulb moment for me: it completely depends on where the money lives.
If you sell and reinvest inside a regular brokerage account (like Fidelity, Schwab, Robinhood, etc.) that's taxable (as capital gains). But, inside an IRA, you can move things around and rebalance without triggering capital gains because of how the account is structured as a retirement vehicle.
At that point, I had a little money in both types of accounts but I hadn't really processed that they operated under completely different rules. Learning that simple distinction changed my approach to how I distributed what I earned side hustling - two separate accounts; two very specific jobs.
With that basic structure in place, the next step would be to figure out how to put my money to work.
The Honest Bottom Line
$1,360 in two months from tasks done in my free time on a laptop and smartphone. Not life-changing and not nothing either. More importantly, the foundation of something that has kept building since.
